Restaurant Recovery Midday Monday Meetings starting 5/12 @ the Argonaut (1433 H St)

Attention: Restaurant Professionals, Managers and Owners

Starting Monday May 12th, Restaurant Recovery will be launching

Midday Monday Meetings

for both restaurant professionals (who are struggling with drug and/or alcohol dependency issues and those who are in recovery) as well as a meeting for families and friends (who have a loved one working in the industry struggling with these same issues). These are closed meetings for either restaurant professionals or the friends/families of restaurant professionals. Given the unique working environment in a restaurant, these meetings may appeal to restaurant professionals who have a desire to stay sober while maintaining a career and a community in the restaurant industry.

Restaurant Recovery meetings will be "hybrid recovery", combining many of the same strategies and philosophies of other well-known groups, while not limiting ourselves to them, either. Members of other fellowships are welcome. We will openly share things that work for us, individually (meditation, exercise, nutrition, therapy) and are open to hearing other peoples' experiences. We are not counselors or therapists and we do not give advice.

We are asking for help getting the word out to other restaurant professionals and team members.

If you would like more information about these Midday Monday Meetings or Restaurant Recovery,  please contact Scott Magnuson at 202-460-7461 or scottrmagnuson [AT] gmail.com.

CrossFit DC opening at 1365 H St on Saturday, April 26; open house today noon to 2 pm

CrossFit DC Northeast will open for business and classes next Saturday, April 26 at 1365 H St.  They're having an Open House today, noon to 2 pm, so stop by to say hello.

CrossFit DC fills the former H Street Playhouse space at 1365 H St

CrossFit DC was started in 2005 as the first CrossFit affiliate in Washington, D.C. "What sets us apart is the quality of our coaching and our emphasis on community through fitness," says Chris Sheppard, CrossFit DC Co-Owner and Head Coach. "Whether we’re working with competitive athletes or fitness rookies, we tailor our coaching to our members to help them realize their health and performance goals. And no matter how challenging the workout, we’re just as serious about having fun in the process."

CrossFit DC Northeast joins the Logan Circle facility at 1722 14th St NW. The new gym will provide another home base for CrossFit DC’s diverse community – from families to young professionals, military veterans to government workers, lawyers to chefs, students to stay-at-home moms. The NE facility will also serve as a new fitness hub for the fast-growing H Street corridor. "Our vision has always been about building a community of people that support each other," says CrossFit DC Founder and Co-Owner Tom Brose. "We’re excited to join H Street’s thriving small-business scene, work with a landlord who is active in the community, and put our heart and soul into serving people in one of D.C.’s most vibrant neighborhoods."

Program offerings at CrossFit DC Northeast will include two-week-long Elements courses for CrossFit beginners, advanced workouts for competitive athletes, personal training, and a full slate of classes at a wide variety of times. The 4500-square-foot space will be fully outfitted with all the equipment that any current or aspiring CrossFitter could hope for, while preserving the unique architecture that has long distinguished the building as an Atlas District landmark. High ceilings for gymnastics rings and climbing ropes; a 70-foot turf lane for indoor sprints and sled pushes; and an open floor plan will provide a "dream space" for the creative strength training and conditioning sessions that have long been a CrossFit DC hallmark.

CrossFit DC Northeast will open for classes beginning Saturday, April 26. For more information, please visit http://www.crossfitdcne.com or email info@crossfitdc.com.

17th Annual School Within School (SWS) Jazz Gala & Auction Sat. May 3, 6 pm at National Press Club

Many of our local DC Public Schools parents host major fundraising auctions and galas to support programming, after care, and other events at neighborhood schools.  SWS, which is now located in the Goding Elementary building at 10th & F St NE, has long had one of the most popular and successful such events.  This year's event is Saturday, May 3, 6 pm at the National Press Club.

Frenchies (world's greatest croissants) returning to Fresh Farm H St Market & opening storefront bakery/cafe on H Street

Frenchie's -- who makes the best croissants anyone has ever had and who was an extremely popular vendor at the H Street Fresh Farm Farmers Market last summer -- announced that she is planning to open a bricks and mortar shop on H Street.  She'll be back on the market when it opens next weekend, but in the meantime she's asking for help on kickstarter to aid with the build out of an undisclosed H Street location that she's secured for her bakery.  This is terrific news for us -- while we've been lucky to have Erica and her amazing confectionaries on H at the market every Saturday, prior reports of her plans to open a bakery had suggested that she would do so closer to her home in Petworth.

If you've never had a Frenchie's croissant, you are seriously missing out an need to plan to get to the H Street Fresh Farm Farmers Market close to its 9 am opening sometime soon.

Help bring these amazing baked goods to an H Street storefront soon and support Frenchie's via her kickstarter:

Bike lanes (contraflow) & "sharrows" being installed on G & I Streets NE this week and next

DDOT is in the midst of installing bike lanes and sharrows on G and I Streets NE.  The rationale for the lanes is in part a hope that H Street streetcars and streetcar tracks will be free of bicycles because cyclists will prefer to use G and I Streets.  The streetcar tracks are wide enough that many bicycles can get stuck in them.

The new lanes are going in on G Street currently.  They are "contraflow lanes" meaning that they are for cycling in the opposite direction that traffic drives on these one way streets.  So the set aside lane on G Street is for east bound cycling.  "Sharrows" are also being installed.  These are signs on the road indicating that cyclists are welcome to share the road with bicyclists and may bike in the same direction as the traffic.  Thus, if you want to bike westbound on G Street, you are welcome to do so with the flow of traffic and cars should respect that they are supposed to share the road with you.

A couple of matters are important to keep in mind.  First, bicyclists are supposed to stop at stop signs.  This may be especially important when using the contraflow because cars will not be used to looking both directions before crossing G or I Street and may therefore be less likely to see a cyclist approaching from the opposite direction along those streets.  Second, the bike lanes are not protected by anything more than the painted double yellow line on the road and may be impacted by cars parking next to them and by people opening car doors into them.  Please be mindful of this when biking and when using the parking lane.  The lanes are new, there are likely to be some implementation issues as everyone gets used to them.  Finally, although I and others strongly urged DDOT to address the poor condition of the road -- especially along the middle portions of G St -- they did not repave prior to installation, so the road remains bumpy for cyclists in places.  Again, please be careful when biking or driving down either street.

Big thanks to a handful of ANC Commissioners from ANC6A and ANC6C as well as other neighborhood leaders who helped bring these to fruition.  And to DDOT's bike guru Mike Goodno who managed the project and who has been in the neighborhood this week overseeing its implementation.  A Q & A with some helpful additional background from DDOT follows.

Fresh Farm H St Farmers Market returns to 13th & H Saturday, April 19 with new vendor Amore Gelato

The Fresh Farm H Street Farmers Market returns to 13th & H Street for the 2014 season on Saturday, April 19.  As in years past, the market will be open each Saturday from 9 am until noon.

The market vendor list looks similar to last year's market with one notable addition.
Amore Gelato.  Amore specializes in making gelato from scratch using organic dairy and fresh ingredients that are locally sourced.  They seem to do a number of interesting flavors, including butternut squash, maple bacon bourbon, nutella hazelnut and goat cheese and fig gelato.  Amore Gelato Website
